Depth of field and aperture comparison Depth of field and aperture comparison

Quick start

Compare depth of field using an explicit circle of confusion.

  1. Enter focal length, focus distance and aperture
  2. Select a sensor preset or type the blur-circle diameter in millimeters
  3. Calculate and export near, far and hyperfocal distances

Depth of field and aperture comparison

Calculate hyperfocal distance, near and far limits using an explicit circle of confusion. Compare apertures and export the result.

Thin-lens geometric estimate for a stated circle of confusion. Focus distance is measured from the lens model’s principal plane. These limits describe an assumed acceptable blur, not an absolute boundary between sharp and unsharp.

Sensor presets are conventional starting points, not camera-specific sharpness guarantees. Viewing size, distance, diffraction, lens behavior and macro pupil magnification are not modeled. Focus distance must exceed focal length; aperture is greater than 0 and at most f/128.
